TomTod drinks coffee. And so can you!

November 26, 2012

What do 750 strips of duct tape (and counting), Google+, an Assistant Superintendent, a stand-up comedian, and a downtown Canton art gallery all have in common? They’re all part of the wild journey known as TomTod Ideas!

As many of you know, 3 months ago this Friday I left my full-time job to launch a crazy dream called TomTod Ideas (www.facebook.com/tomtodideas). TomTod walks alongside middle school students through a year-long, personalized mentoring experience that empowers them to launch ideas they have dreamt up that will bring help and healing to the places in our world that need it most.

In that short time, an incredible group of volunteers have risen up to help push this idea forward and all sorts of wonderful things are happening that I would love to tell you about.

To aid in this story telling and to help TomTod continue to move forward, some friends and I are hosting a series of coffee hours over the next several weeks as opportunities to hear the vision and heart of TomTod and to enable friends like yourself to be part of the team that help support and encourage the dreams and possibility that lie within middle school students. There are no monetary, time, or talent requirements to join one of our gatherings…just a desire to hear more about what is happening.

You’ll find a wide variety of times/places available below and I do hope that you’ll join me for one of them! Please RSVP to jdh@tomtodideas.org at your earliest convenience so that we can make sure that we have ample beverages and informational materials for everyone present. I can’t wait to share with you!

Where in the World…

December 20, 2008

carmen-12…is Carmen Sandiego?  that show used to be one of my favorite shows growing up, particularly due to Rockapella’s compelling outro (for an amazing flashback to the past, go here…unbelievable mullet, ridiculous suspenders, and so much more).

over the last couple years i’ve had the opportunity to develop materials that give a birds-eye view of a myriad of social justice issues that are out there, but that we are often largely oblivious to.  i’ve presented these in a few different formats, including overnight retreats called “world immersion experiences” and also 1-3 hour seminars called “being worldly.”  one piece of these presentations has addressed the fact that most of us know very little about world geography.  and if we don’t know where a country is located, it makes it much less likely that we’ll care what’s happening in that country. talking ’bout porn…

January 23, 2008

an email i sent out today:

Friends…

The other week I wrote some of you & let you know that I’ve had the opportunity to speak several times at The Chapel recently, particularly around the topic of pornography & intimacy. Thanks to many of you who have taken some time to pray for me…your prayers have been felt & encouraging. Some of you go to The Chapel and heard me in the morning, but I thought you might be interested in talk I gave at Illuminate. Anyway, I wanted to give you the links to the two different talks that I gave so that you can take a listen if you so desire:

Reconstructing Intimacy: Intimacy with Others
I co-preached this sermon with one of our Sr. Pastors, Paul Sartarelli. The main topic I spoke on was accountability.

http://www.the-chapel.org/audio (both the sermon on the 13 & the 20 are the same sermon, just different services.

Reconstructing Intimacy: The Fallacy of Intimacy with Self
I shared this talk with our Illuminate service, an evening service offered at The Chapel. It’s sort of a service for young people, but we really have a range of ages there. But it allows us to to be a bit more outside the box with sermon style, so it’s definitely a different style of sermon that what Paul & I did in the morning. I’ve made a photo album on Facebook so that you can see most of the slides that I used…they’re in order, but you’ll have to use context clues to figure out when I was showing them : ) You can look at them here:

And the song we sang in response at the end, if you desire to really embrace the experience, was “Grace Flows Down.” You can listen to it online here:

The sermon is the January 20th one found here:

I’d love to hear your feedback & thoughts on either of these. For a variety of resources we’re making available along with this series, you can go to http://www.the-chapel.org/purity

Hope this finds you well…

Joel Daniel
